Airplane Food: What To Pack

Packing your own food for a flight is the ultimate travel "pro tip." Not only do you save yourself from the $15 soggy terminal sandwich, but you also ensure you actually have something you like when the "hangry" hits at 30,000 feet.

However, the TSA has a very specific definition of what counts as "food" versus "liquid." Here is your guide to packing the perfect airplane snack bag without getting flagged in the security line. The most important thing to remember is the 3-1-1 rule. If you can spill it, spread it, spray it, or pump it, it’s a liquid.

Allowed (Solids): Sandwiches, veggies, fruit, protein bars, crackers, jerky, nuts, hard-boiled eggs, firm cheese, pizza, and pastries.

Restricted (Liquids/Gels): Yogurt, hummus, peanut butter, jam, salad dressing, and salsa. The Catch: These are allowed only if they are in containers 3.4 ounces (100ml) or smaller and fit in a single quart-sized clear bag.

Happy snacking!
